To surcharge or not to surcharge!

To Surcharge or not to Surcharge. With the Easter long week end public holidays looming (Sun 17th April & Mon 18th April), closely followed by ANZAC day (Mon 25th April), Hospitality and Retail outlets are often left wondering ‘if is it time I started to implement a Public Holiday surcharge’ to help cover the increased wages the business must pay to get employees in the door. With the Hospitality Award and Retail Award rates business must sometime pay more than double the standard hourly pay rate to employees. Obviously, the decision to implement these charges are at the sole discretion of each individual business, and whilst it is not for us to advise if this is wrong or right for your business, it is important for us to let you know that your IdealPOS system is more than capable of managing a surcharge at your site. Both IdealPOS 7 & IdealPOS 8 can deal with a surcharge, however the latest release of IdealPOS 8 makes the ability to further manage this feature with even more precision. In IdealPOS 7 there are four different ways to apply a surcharge, the easiest can be applied per each POS Terminal by going to Setup > POS Terminals > Modify > POS Settings: Here we are able to Select either a % or $ surcharge rate and stipulate which day or days over a date range to apply a surcharge, In addition to this IdealPOS 7 has the ability to do Item, Subtotal and Tender Surcharges, full instructions on how to use these features can be found by clicking on the below Links: With the release of IdealPOS 8 Build 3 and newer early in 2022 extra features have been added to compliment those found above in IdealPOS 7. This includes the ability to save specific surcharges on a date basis and also to repeat the surcharge each year, amongst other features. Simply go to File > Sales > Surcharges Full instructions on how to use this feature in IdealPOS 8 can be found by clicking on the below link – It is also pertinent to mention that a Public Holiday Surcharge may be in addition to standard Payment Surcharges that can be imposed by a business. The guidelines for Public Holiday surcharges can be found by clicking on the below links: Also, it is recommended that you always speak to your accountant in relation to surcharges and get their professional advice when dealing with any type of surcharge implemented in your business.
